3-2-20 - Rained Out

We wake up to the sky pouring down rain in a steady, intensive manner.  We can tell it’s going to be one of those days where the rain isn’t going to let up.  We declare it a rare day off where we plan to do absolutely nothing while not leaving the Airbnb apartment.

The apartment is ok but not the best place to be holed up.  The WiFi does not work downstairs, there is a leak in the ceilng that is dripping water into Justin’s room, the kitchen can only fit 1 person at a time and one of the chairs broke apart when we sat on it. However; it does have a nice outdoor balcony and Kyle chose it for the location as it’s only 1 block from Ipanema beach.  We have definitely stayed at worse Airbnb’s on the trip.

Corey takes a practice SAT test which consumes 5 hours.  Kyle works on catching up on the blog.  Our intense reader Ashlynn is reading yet another book on her phone (she finishes one every other day).  Justin is analyzing the upcoming NFL free agency and the potential moves the Giants can make. Everyone is just kind of lounging around.

The kids have discovered a new original series on Netflix called “The I-land.” so we watch the first 3 episodes.  It’s kind of like Survivor crossed with Lost mixed with a pinch of Hunger Games.  There is only one season and it only has 7 episodes so it should be easy to power through it in Brazil.

By 7 pm, we have accomplished our big goal of not leaving the apartment; however, the call of a rarely-seen-on-this-trip Dominos next door to the apartment is too strong to resist.  We walk next door and there is an entryway with the Dominos sign which we enter and find ourselves in the kitchen with five employees.  They (presumably) ask us in Portuguese what we’re doing back there.  Kyle is trying to act out a charade of we are hungry yet clueless tourists who really REALLY want some pizza.  They finally figure it out that we are clueless yet hungry and send us to the Italian restaurant next door.  It turns out that we are to order the Dominos in the Italian restaurant and they go next door and cook it. (Note to self: Never assume you know what you are doing while traveling.)

With 20 minutes before the order will be ready, we head next door to the supermarket to get some more food. After that, we attempt to find souvenirs but the rain forces us to abort the mission.  We pick up the pizza and return to the apartment for dinner.
