6/30/19 - Historic Yankees vs Redsox Game in London
Day 14. If Canada is a lazy stroll in the park, London is a mad sprint to get everything we can fit in 41/2 days.
We are having boys day (Kyle, John, Corey & Justin) while Leanne takes Ashlynn and Ashley.
We start off with British Museum (round 2) where we see the Rosetta Stone, Roman Statues of Venus and Disc Obelisk and parts of the Parthenon that were brought from Greece to London before WWII.
Next we head to a cool place off the beaten path about an hour outside London that John found called “God’s Own Junkyard.” It’s the worlds largest collection of neon signs which is basically in guy’s house who owns the collection. They have a cafe where we get lunch and eat at tables with neon buzzing all around. I don’t think this place is in the typical tourist books.
Next we go to a historic event. The Yankees are playing the Redsox in the first ever MLB series in Europe. It was totally unplanned but the timing worked out great. I grew up and still am a Yankees fan. Excitement runs high as we enter the stadium until we realize we are entirely surrounded by Boston fans. That wasn’t indicated on the tickets I bought. It doesn’t get much better as the Yankees give up 3 home runs in the 1st inning and are losing 4-0 as the Redsox fans are going nuts.
Yankees are losing 4-2 at the end of the 7th. In the 8th, the Yankees explode for 8 runs and order is restored to the universe. It turns out all the Boston fans around me flew to London just to see the game. As the Yankees get the final out, we are the only ones left in our section.
I have to give a thumbs up to MLB. They made the outfield fence really short. The result was 2 games - 50 runs and 65 hits. The British came away thinking baseball is exciting (having never seen a 4 hour 1-0 game).
Leanne pointed out today that Megan Markle and Prince Harry were also at the game although I’m fairly certain they had better seats than we did 😉
